In the Cradle of Vexilon è un episodio della stagione 4 di Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Il Capitano Carol Freeman è impegnata in una missione di manutenzione di un computer antico responsabile della gestione della megastruttura nota come Corazonia e Bradward Boimler deve occuparsi degli impianti energetici lasciati dalla Flotta Stellare nel primo contatto con quella cività. Per la prima volta Boimler è al comando di una squadra di cadetti e la missione si rivelerà molto più complicata del previsto.

Sulla Cerritos, Beckett Mariner, D'Vana Tendi e Samanthan Rutherford affrontano i primi compiti da Tenenti JG, ma non li trovano molto diversi da quelli dei guardiamarina.

  • Scopriamo che Billups ha un furetto di nome "Lancelot".
  • Corazonia è una megastruttura che rientra nella definizione di "Anello di Dyson", ovvero una versione semplificata della Sfera di Dyson. Un concetto del genere è centrale in opere di fantascienza come I burattinai e la serie "Halo".
  • Tendi spiega che su Orione le divergenze vengono appianate grazie a combattimenti con la spada da bendati.
  • Bradward Boimler guida per la prima volta una missione di sbarco.
  • Non c'è nessun riferimento agli attacchi della Flotta Nova, che è il tema portante della stagione.
  • Taylor, Dirk e Big Merp sono identificati per la prima volta nei dialoghi.

  • L'episodio inizia direttamente con la sigla, senza teaser.
  • Il fatto che il Sistema stellare sia definito "bespoke" ci fa pensare che, non solo la struttura, ma tutto il sistema sia stato "progettato" dalla civiltà antica.
  • Il capitano Carol Freeman usa la navetta NCC-77567 per scendere sulla struttura.
  • I Corazoniani abitano la struttura ad anello che chiamano "Corazonia", ma non è stata costruita da loro. Il loro luogo d'origine e l'identità dei costruttori non sono noti.
  • Il luogo in cui si ritrova Boimler dopo essere stato gravemente ferito, prima di essere rianimato, è un chiaro riferimento alla Loggia nera della serie TV Twin Peaks. Fuori dalla finestra si vede inoltre la Montagna Nera (introdotta da Shaxs in We'll Always Have Tom Paris) e appare anche il Koala cosmico.
  • Nonostante la cosa non venga chiarita dai sottotitoli (che riportano solo speaking Koala), il Koala parla inglese, ma al contrario: la sua battuta è «It is not your time, Bradward Boimler!», ovvero «Non è il tuo momento, Bradward Boimler!». Si tratta della prima volta in cui il Koala ha delle battute, ma il suo interprete non è nominato nei crediti.

  • L'esperienza di Freeman con la tecnologia "arcaica" sembra una ragione logica per metterla a capo della missione in prima persona, tuttavia, quando si trova in difficoltà, lei finisce per chiamare Billups che risolve il problema per lei insormontabile in poco tempo. Se già sapeva che Billups poteva aiutarla, non sarebbe stato più logico portarlo con sé sulla superficie fin da subito, anche solo per sicurezza?

Boimler: It's not an errand, it's a mission. My first mission as commander. It's pretty cool, right?
T'Lyn: Perhaps we should proceed.
Boimler: Ensigns, at attention. This is a cut-and-dry power terminal upgrade. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to come to me or Provisional Lieutenant Junior Grade T'Lyn, who's on site in case any science stuff happens.
T'Lyn: Everything that has ever occurred is science stuff.
Boimler: Oh. Uh, right. That went pretty well, I'd say.
T'Lyn: I do not know to what you are referring. We have not started the repair.
Boimler: I mean, talking to my team. I've had good bosses and bad ones. I just don't want to repeat their mistakes.
T'Lyn: Your caution is warranted. Statistically, ensigns serving under recently promoted commanders are more likely to experience death and/or dismemberment.
Boimler: Death?!
T'Lyn: Yes. And/or dismemberment.
Boimler: Well, luckily, this mission's pretty tame. It's just swapping out some terminals.
T'Lyn: The component pieces are unstable and could detonate at any moment.

T'Lyn: It is admirable that you care for the safety of your team, but danger is an accepted risk of Starfleet duty.
Boimler: No, I know. It's not that.
T'Lyn: If you have not been acting in their defense, then what has caused your unpredictable behavior?
Boimler: Last week I was an ensign with them, and now, randomly, I'm supposed to tell them what to do? What gives me the right to put my peers in a position where they could die?
T'Lyn: Your promotion was not random. I studied your records and mission logs before our departure. The commander was correct to promote you. Your work is exemplary. Look at your team. They deserve your trust, just as Commander Ransom trusted you.
Boimler: They could all have greatness in them.
T'Lyn: That remains to be seen, but if you do not order them to aid in the unloading of these power cylinders, we will all perish.
Boimler: The files really said I'm great?
T'Lyn: They thoroughly describe your strengths and shortcomings.
Boimler: You're right. I have to let them do their jobs. T'Lyn says I got to put you guys in danger, so let's do this.
T'Lyn: That is not how I would have communicated the lesson.
Boimler: Everybody up. We've worked together for years. I trust you. Big Merp, you're with me. We're unloading the transport. Taylor and Meredith, claim a terminal and get those power cylinders reattached. Nobody's exploding today.
