La'an viaggia indietro nel tempo fino alla Terra del ventunesimo secolo per prevenire un attacco che altererà la storia futura dell'umanità e la porterà faccia a faccia con la sua controversa eredità.

In questo episodio…

  • Scopriamo che le Guerre Eugenetiche e l'ascesa al potere di Khan Noonien Singh, per quanto foriere di un genocidio, sono state fondamentali nella costruzione della Terra che conosciamo in Star Trek, e nella fondazione della Federazione.
    Il motivo asserito dalla romulana in incognito è che soltanto toccando davvero il fondo l'umanità avrebbe avuto quello slancio che le avrebbe permesso di riprendersi, fino ad avere un ruolo centrale in un'organizzazione interplanetaria.
  • Vediamo che nel 2260 il Dipartimento per le Indagini Temporali non esiste ancora, visto che l'agente che al termine dell'episodio raccomanda La'An di non parlare della sua esperienza con alcuno viene dal futuro, e dal dialogo emerge come la tenente non sia al corrente della sua esistenza, fatto che non stupisce l'agente che a quel punto afferma esplicitamente come il suo Dipartimento debba ancora essere fondato.
    Dal momento che nel 2373 (Trials and Tribble-ations) gli ufficiali della Flotta Stellare lo conoscono senza alcuna particolare riserva, così come Dulmer e Lucsly sono contemporanei e non hanno viaggiato nel tempo per raggiungere Deep Space Nine, possiamo dedurre che la sua fondazione avverrà in un qualche momento nel secolo abbondante che intercorre tra i due episodi.
  • Non compare il personaggio di Christine Chapel e l'attrice Jess Bush non viene citata nei credit della sigla iniziale di questo episodio.

Note

  • Non è in continuità visto che nel corso dell'episodio scopriremo come il punto di divergenza tra le due timeline sia nel XXI secolo, però il rifiuto all'inizio da parte di Kirk di aiutare Spock ed i Vulcaniani contro i Romulani, anche se questo costerebbe probabilmente la distruzione dell'ultima flotta vulcaniana e l'indifendibilità di Vulcano, ricorda come a parti invertite in The Expanse e nella terza stagione di Star Trek: Enterprise i Vulcaniani (tranne T'Pol) si siano rifiutati di aiutare gli Umani contro gli Xindi, anche se ciò avrebbe potuto comportare la distruzione della Terra.
  • Il dipinto mostrato e più volte citato in relazione a un possibile furto da parte di Pelia è "Concerto a tre" di Jan Vermeer. Il quadro non era conservato al Louvre, bensì al "Isabella Stewart-Gardner Museum" di Boston, dove è stato rubato il 18 marzo del 1990: gli sceneggiatori volevano forse sottintendere che Pelia fosse implicata nel furto dell'opera.
  • Nell'episodio è citato il motore di ricerca "DuckDuckGo", prodotto di punta dall'omonima azienda, che è noto dato che «non raccoglie né condivide informazioni personali».
  • Non è chiaro come mai Sera, che è una viaggiatrice del tempo, debba aspettare 30 anni invece semplicemente di fare un salto in avanti. Inoltre, sapendo che in quel periodo c'è almeno un vascello romulano di Classe T'liss, non si capisce perché il "Noonien-Singh Institute for Cultural Advancement" non sia stato comunque distrutto. Una spiegazione potrebbe essere che il vascello ha potuto viaggiare nel tempo, scaricare Sera ed eventuali suoi affiliati, per poi fare ritorno al suo tempo originale.

  • Il metodo di tracciamento del trizio (uno degli isotopi dell'idrogeno, 3H) è decisamente senza senso. Prima di tutto, va ricordato che la cosiddetta "Fusione fredda" è il nome comune di un esperimento che apparentemente può portare a una reazione di fusione nucleare a temperatura ambiente, ma che in oltre 30 anni non è stato possibile riprodurre o descrivere teoricamente in modo soddisfacente. Anche ammesso che questa tecnologia sia fattibile, non ha per nulla senso che prodotti di fusione come il trizio, per quanto sostanzialmente innocui per la salute umana, vengano semplicemente rilasciati nell'atmosfera; più comune è il rilascio in mare, in concentrazioni uguali o più basse di quella naturale. Detto tutto questo, la quantità di fosforo nel quadrante dell'orologio è minuscola rispetto al volume d'aria che copre una città come Toronto: rilevare una piccola emissione di trizio con una così irrisoria quantità di "reagente" è ordini di grandezza più complicato rispetto a trovare un ago in un pagliaio.

  • Il Kirk della timeline alternativa che ottiene i soldi necessari a vivere sulla Terra del XXI secolo vincendo a scacchi ricorda i Vulcaniani che fanno lo stesso con il biliardo in Carbon Creek, le cui scene del passato sono ambientate nel 1957.
  • Come in Past Tense, emerge il fatto che la mancata fondazione della Federazione avrebbe avantaggiato i Romulani.
  • Si prova a dare una spiegazione, con le incursioni temporali, del motivo per cui le Guerre Eugenetiche fossero state fissate inizialmente negli anni '90 del XX secolo, per poi essere riposizionate nel secolo successivo. Naturalmente la motivazione off-universe è che ai tempi della Star Trek: The Original Series il primo periodo era di 30 anni successivo rispetto alla data di produzione, e difficilmente si pensava che Star Trek sarebbe stato ancora in produzione decenni dopo, tuttavia quanto affermato qui tenta di giustificare in-universe. Interessante notare che già un anno prima della messa in onda dell'episodio, Aaron J. Waltke aveva pubblicato un post su Twitter suggerendo una cosa simile[1].
  • Nella timeline alternativa la Flotta Stellare si chiama Flotta della Terra Unita: nella timeline regolare invece il nome era già Flotta Stellare prima della fondazione della Federazione, come ampiamente mostrato in Star Trek: Enterprise. Peraltro, questo nonostante venga esplicitamente affermato come la Terra della timeline alternativa sia diventata inabitabile in superficie, dopo essere stata occupata (presumibilmente dai Romulani) e liberata, e che quindi gli Umani sono molto più sparpagliati nello spazio o in strutture sotterranee.
  • Kirk pensa che il cognome di La'an sia "Noonian Soong", invece di "Noonien Singh": lui non ha mai sentito parlare della prima famiglia in quanto non nella sua timeline tutta lo loro storia è stata cancellata, al contrario sembra che la famiglia degli scienziati Soong sia nota. Da Farewell sappiamo esistere una connessione tra le due
